The second (?) NKHC overseas venture (senior members remind me the club has been to Les Gets in France) saw us arriving in Madeira to beautiful sunshine on 2 February. Gloomy weather forecasts encouraged us on to the highest peaks the next day, where we met with challenging conditions (see left hand photo) but the whole party managed to join some finches on top of Pico Ruivo. It’s fair to […]
A party about 12 had three days of non-stop sunshine in the Lakes on 23-25 February. Skiddaw and much of the Grasmoor range were among the summits visited, with a few snow patches to add to the fun. Good hospitality in the pub at Swinside, and a trip to a rather loud curry house in Keswick on Saturday night for some of us. I’ve posted a grainy photo taken with […]
We shared the well-equipped Oread MC hut and walks with fellow hill-walking club the STMC for this weekend at Rhyd-ddu. As you will see from these pictures the weather was not of the best although those who travelled early got a good walk in on a windy Long Mynd on Friday. Some of Tony’s pictures show his party on the Nantlle ridge; meanwhile others attempted Moel Hebog, and the rest […]
I slightly lost track of the numbers but I think there were about 15 of us on this weekend, featuring a fantastic Christmas dinner organised by Anne, with Brian and assistants overcoming a gas supply crisis to produce the turkey and plenty others contributing excellent dishes. The hut was located really high up above the Ceiriog valley, which I’d never visited before and which only revealed its spectacular nature towards […]
Those of us who arrived on Thursday night were driven off the hills by heavy rain on Friday but we had a very pleasant trip to Caernarfon in the afternoon, discovering a top curry house and a couple of good pubs. For most of the rest of the weekend the weather was great. Most people headed either for the Nantlle ridge or the hills to the east, where we reached […]
Summer arrived early this year – just in time for our April weekend. The NT hut was perched high in the hills between Charmouth and Golden Cap – and proved to be very comfortable apart from the ‘petite’ bedrooms – luckily some of us were able to make use of the lounge sofas instead! Our walk on the Saturday saw us all head towards Golden Cap then on towards the […]
We had a an excellent weekend at High House in Borrowdale with better weather for some than others, good snow cover on Glaramara and a great curry on Saturday night. Those of us who arrived on Friday night met some rather bedraggled walkers returning from Great/Green Gable, but Saturday started fair. Two parties headed for Glaramara and most of the rest for some lower hills further down the valley. The […]
Some great photos from Tony from what looks like an excellent weekend at Patterdale. After an advance party visited some smaller tops round Ullswater on Friday, Helvellyn via Striding Edge and Place Fell were visited on Saturday and Sunday, along with the pick of the local hostelries.
A cheery gathering of 18 headed off to the Peak District for the annual Festive Meet in December. ‘Were we meant to bring sleeping bags?’ asked Shira as we sped up the M1….. ‘Oh I am sure the hut will have spare blankets’ was the reassuring reply…… First stop was the impressive gritstone crag of The Roaches on Friday afternoon where two carloads converged on foot (after several mobile phone […]
Seven attended for what turned out to be a nice hut in a good location with favourable weather for early October. A late Thursday night arrival for Adrian S, Manoj and Dave followed by a few drams of malt whisky and dodgy ‘banana rum’ made for a late start on Friday morning, after Michael joined before breakfast. We were lucky to get the last parking slot at Pen y Pass […]
A first visit to Dartmoor for many of us, staying at the Okehampton Youth Hostel which was well placed for Saturday’s expedition to Yes Tor, High Willhays and the beautiful West Okement valley with a fair bit of trackless moorland on the way. On Sunday the biggest group went to Postbridge and headed for Sittaford Tor, where a group of people walking off into the moor to stand in a […]
Bryn Hafod, the Mountain Club’s hut near Dinas Mawddwy was our base for the weekend. Nestled up a valley under the Arans there were great walks from the door to Aran Fadwwdy and several other peaks. Saturday took us over to Cadair Idris for a circuit of the tops looking over the sea and the rest of Snowdonia.
