After all that rain, we were lucky to have three days of mostly good and often sunny weather on a fun weekend in the peak district on 6-8 March. Ladybower reservoir and the Tower, Win Hill, Higger Tor, Stanage, Froggatt and the White Edge were all visited giving Roger lots of chances to practice his bouldering.
A good turnout on the January Lakes trip to Stair, shared with the STMC, saw us making the best of some overcast weather around the Newlands Valley and Coledale [more challenging than that on the Coledale horseshoe on Saturday – ed]. Thanks to our illustrious founder’s haggis-hunting skills we did justice to Burns night with a cook-in on the Saturday. Those who stayed till Monday were rewarded with a real […]
Tony reports that the Litton Cheney trip was very good with some sunny but wild weather down on the Dorset coast, and a cosy YHA hut. Everyone lent a hand in one way or another to make for a very successful event, thanks to all. Picture at Hardy’s Monument on the Saturday morning.
With thanks to Tony L for providing some photos from his vast library, this is a quick post to fill in some of the gaps in our 2018-19 activities, starting with this nice view of the Derbyshire dales from the pre-Christmas outing last December. We had well-attended visits to the Lakes in May and September making the most of the variable weather. […]
Various people who were on the Canary Islands trip gave me an account of it over a curry last night. I can report that the walking was excellent, including at least two walks from our accommodation on the north side of the island. This was quieter than the south but with less good weather as the group discovered when they ventured further afield into the sunshine. There was only one […]
13 of us showed up in Seathwaite, and with the prospect of a soggy weekend, we prepared for the worst. Friday confirmed our expectations, but by the time we got out (late) on Saturday, the rain had cleared, and some of us enjoyed good views between scurrying low cloud. Different groups set off for Green Crag, White Pike and Caw, but bitterly cold winds sent us scuttling back to warm […]
Bill reports that there were 9 club members on the weekend who arrived at various times. It was a tad wet and windy on the Friday and Bill and Brian’s early start meant they arrived in time for a longish walk, but the high wind and rain put paid to plan A, plan B was thwarted by a flooded river path and plan C was blocked by a farmers fence, […]
OK you can’t tell from the picture of the hut on the front page, but it was a triumph over the grim weather that all 11 attendees from the NKHC and STMC climbed Ingleborough or Whernside on Saturday. High winds kept us off the tops on Sunday but we had a better day of it around Austwick and Malham. We also visited some excellent pubs, with Saturday’s dinner at the […]
A cracking weekend in North Wales with a small select group, staying at the Gwydyr MC Hut in Capel Curig. One car stopped en route in the Berwyns to do a circular walk from Llandrillo (SW of Llangollen), up onto the Berwyn Ridge and back, which turned out rather longer than planned after losing the path and negotiating bog and tussock grass for some distance, but the weather was warm […]
Tony’s report: Excellent week in a roomy well-equipped ex-hotel. Weather far better than last year, good walking every day except one with gales, and even that was good for low-level exploring. Landscape not the most dramatic, but many new Munros gained on some longish days. Dry weather previously treated us to dried up bog and easy river crossings We broke the mould this year with seven off us taking […]
Our April meet was to one of the club’s old favourites, the Robertson Lamb Hut in Great Langdale. There was plenty of chance to sit out and soak up the view and we even saw a stoat running round the grounds. The first couple of days were hot and sunny and there were several walks going on in Langdale and further afield. Sunday was colder and the group that battled […]
A strange weekend as regards the weather – Sheila says that on Saturday 8 participants took a walk from Swanage over to Studland Bay (passing Harry’s Rocks on the way and seeing the Isle of Wight in the distance). The weather was bitterly cold and a raw NE wind faced them all the way there. Luckily they found a lovely pub just outside Studland just as the snow started……….so waited […]
